sedekahje lore

September 23, 2024 (6mo ago)

i have been facing difficulties where its hard to find masjid or surau qrs that i have previously saved in my gallery. one way is to save these qrs into an album. then somewhere in july 2023, i came across this pdf that contains 190 pages of mosque/surau/institution's qr code for e-derma/donation (there are around 500 total qrs i think).

i thought, why not we build a centralized directory to list all these qrs? the others must have been facing similar issues as mine. i then created a github repo, built a simple layout, and snipped the qr one by one to display it. i abandoned it after 6 qrs because i was too lazy to continue (average pet project experience). refer to below image: how it started

until one day, i saw hazqeel's post on x where he started a thread with the hashtag #qrsejid and uploaded some qr from his gallery. others have also started to crowdsource and contribute to the thread. hence, i felt a bit motivated and have decided to give this project a go again.

i decided to pull up v0 and claude to 'speedrun' this project on a random friday. i shared about it on twitter and over the weekend, it started to gain some attention, and the tech community there (read: devtalk) began to contribute ideas and suggestions. after some public contributions, especially atif's part where he extracted the qr content and designed custom frames for the qrs, here is how it looked like: sedekahje v1

then out of nowhere, altaf suddenly reached out to me saying that he has bought 2 domains (around rm80) for me to host the app. thats when i thought, ah this is becoming something serious now haha, lets continue working on it properly.

until now, there are already 22 contributors who 'cooked' to enhance sedekahje. there are approximately 104 prs closed with 9 ongoing issues active on my repo. cant thank them enough for being willing to spend their free time contributing. at that time mostly what i do is merge their prs. this is not my project anymore, this is ours (insert communist bug bunny meme).

my ultimate goal is i hope it'll ease people to make donations anytime and anywhere, like cases when you go to the mosque for friday prayers but forget to bring some cash or can't find the qr. now, you can even sedekah when you wake up for fajr prayer.

currently, we have around 700+ qrs collected (shoutout to farhan helmy, my mentor for contributing 189 using opencv & ocr). at the same time, there are also individuals reaching out to me directly to contribute qrs whenever they visit a mosque or surau. there are two ways you can contribute, one is by forking my repo, or dm our twitter account directly.

feel free to visit https://sedekah.je/ and try it out! let me know if you have any feedback or suggestions.

to contribute, visit the github repo here.
